How Our Divorce Process Works

We use a streamlined, flat-fee system designed to make the divorce process as simple, predictable, and efficient as possible. Most clients complete their cases without court appearances or unnecessary litigation.

Below is a step-by-step overview of what to expect.

1.Schedule a Consult

Every case begins with a 30-minute consultation.

During the consultation, we will:

  • Review your situation

  • Determine whether your case is uncontested or may require additional steps

  • Explain the available service tiers

  • Provide a clear flat-fee quote

  • Discuss payment plan options if needed

This consultation allows you to understand the process and cost before making any commitment.

2. Hire the Firm

If you decide to move forward:

  • You will sign a representation contract

  • Pay the flat fee or set up a payment plan

  • Receive instructions for the next steps

Once the contract is signed and the initial payment is made, the attorney-client relationship begins.

3. Document Preparation

After hiring the firm, we begin preparing your case.

This stage typically includes:

  • Completing intake forms

  • Collecting necessary information

  • Drafting the required legal documents

  • Reviewing drafts with you

  • Obtaining signatures from both parties when applicable

For uncontested cases, most documents are completed and signed before the case is filed.

4. Filing and Waiting Period

Once the documents are ready:

  • The case is filed with the appropriate court

  • Tennessee’s mandatory waiting period begins

Waiting periods:

  • 60 days for divorces without children

  • 90 days for divorces with children

During this time, there is usually no court activity. This is a normal part of the process.

Most clients will not hear from the firm during this period unless something specific arises.

5. Final Decree

After the waiting period:

  • The final documents are submitted to the court

  • The judge reviews and approves the divorce

  • The Final Decree of Divorce is entered

In many uncontested cases, this happens without a court appearance unless you have minor children.

Once the decree is entered:

  • You will receive a copy of your final documents

  • Your case will be officially closed

What If the Case Becomes Contested?

Our firm uses a phased, flat-fee system.

If circumstances change, such as:

  • Your spouse hires a lawyer

  • There is a disagreement about terms

  • Additional hearings or discovery are required

We will:

  • Explain the next phase of representation

  • Provide a clear flat-fee quote for that phase

  • Allow you to decide how to proceed

You will always know the cost of the next step before work begins.

Communication During Your Case

Our firm primarily communicates by email to keep the process efficient and organized.

In many cases, you may not hear from us for several weeks during the statutory waiting period. This is normal and does not mean anything is wrong with your case.
