West Tennessee Divorce Guide
Tennessee courts are divided into judicial districts that cover either one large county like Shelby or Davidson or a group of rural counties. West Tennessee includes every county west of the Tennessee River, spanning the 24th through 30th Judicial Districts. We file uncontested divorces in any of these districts, and this guide covers the courthouse details, filing fees, and local requirements for each county.
The widely accepted Parent Education Seminar provider in West Tennessee is uptoparents.org. All parties getting divorced in Tennessee with minor children must take a parenting class. Shelby County has its own list of approved providers, which can be found here.
What You Need to Know
Most uncontested divorces can be filed and closed without a court appearance by simply mailing the documents to the court clerk of that county. In the event an in-person court appearance is required, our office charges a travel expense of $4/mile both ways between the courthouse and our office at 5100 Poplar Avenue Suite 708, Memphis, TN 38137. The travel fee only applies if a trip to a rural courthouse is necessary.
All divorces in West Tennessee can be filed in Chancery Court. Some counties also allow filing in Circuit or General Sessions Court, but we file everything outside of Memphis in Chancery Court for efficiency.
Only two districts currently have e-filing: the 30th District in Shelby County and the 28th District covering Haywood, Crockett, and Gibson counties. For all other counties, we need signed originals mailed to our office for filing.
If you have an uncontested divorce without minor children in any West Tennessee county, we file it in Tipton County under a venue waiver. Any case with children, even if uncontested, must be filed in your county of residence.
24th Judicial District
The 24th Judicial District is presided over by Chancellor Vicki Hodge Hoover and covers the counties along the Tennessee River from Kentucky to Mississippi.
